I would imagine there are a number of factors - different makes of phone for example having different antenna setups - if you are both holding the phones then how you hold it may make a difference - I imagine the list goes on and on!
A friend of mine is on O2 too, we can stand next to each other and she tends to get fewer bars on her note 3 than I do on my Galaxy A3 - never really worried about it though, but no doubt I will now!!

As a technophobe i would jokingly say maybe O2 takes the best for themselves and leaves Giffgaff with less:smileywink:
