New Contract

I am now in last month of 24 month contract (pay monthly) so eligible for free upgrade through O2.  Much better deal for new iPhone 17 Pro and unlimited data (still through o2) through "mobile phones direct .com"

If I take out a new contract this way, how do I switch my number over and ultimately not end up paying for two contracts at the same time?  Can one contract be 'switched over' to another this way???
