Thanks Perksie and Bambino...found the post BUT the one thing I am still unsure of is this..I will only be using my phone for calling and texting...so do I need to turn data roaming and mobile data off? (Samsung S3) I know I need to turn something back on if I want to send pictures???...

PS I have a laptop in the apartment and use that with a dongle for emails etc etc. No Wifi available in apartment

yes turn both off untill you want to send a mms (picture message) then turn both on to send then both off to stop data usage

You need to dial 1760 to turn it off before you leave the UK, 1750 turns it on:
