Why has my data usage suddenly over doubled with no different usage of the phone I’m coming to the end of my contract which seems suspicious

No one can guess why but you can look on your phone in the data settings to see which apps are using the most data.

It's advisable to also turn off mobile data when not using it or whilst connected to wifi.

You should find the by-app usage in your Sim and Network settings on Android, @Liz1223- might help to pinpoint the data-munching culprit.
