Today I received a message from O2 stating I had used £1 of data. My phone is not wifi enabled and I have never made an internet connection. I live alone and the phone is always kept indoors. My phone usage amounts to two or three texts per month. The tariff I am on is "talkalot" (pay and go). Is there something in the small print which would let O2 charge me for data when I have no internet connection, or is it a bit more sinister and is the result of someone making illegal use of my account.

Hi there you need to call 4445 and talk to a customer service agent to clarify, please don't rely on live chat as they're not great with account issues.
The £1 charge could be something called web daily iirc, but I'm not 100% sure. I'll do some digging and see if I can get clearer info on that.
But get onto 4445 to clarify as we on here are fellow customers, with no access to your account info.
Charlie.
Edit: So it looks like web daily at £1 a day will kick in even if you only use a small amount of data, but I'm only going on what I've gleaned from this forum. Another member will surely be along shortly to explain it better, and probably correctly where I'm not sure lol!
But to be sure call cs on 4445 asap.

The talkalot tariff is a very old one. I certainly can't undertand how you have been charged for data you say you have never used...unless you have mobile data enabled on your phone. As @gindygoo says you need to ring 4445 and check out your account. Best time would be between 8-8.30am tomorrow morning

Thanks Charlie, unfortunately my hearing is not so good, so it will be a couple of days before I can get someone to make the call for me. I think it's more likely to be an O2 charge, as hackers would be looking for more than £1.

@Anonymous You can reassure yourself it's not hackers. Have a look at the settings on your phone and just make sure mobile data is turned off......

It is almost certainly web daily that's kicked in for some reason. Have you sent or received any picture messages? Ensure mobile data is switched off at all times or disable the apn. What phone do you have and we can advise you how to do this.

Thanks for the message. I checked the settings on my Nokia 635 Lumia after reading previous posts and found that both wifi and wifi sense had been activated. As the £1 charge only appeared yesterday, I assume I must have accidentally activated it then. I remember I had been deleting the call history, but I am sure I did not change any settings. I have now turned off both wifi and wifi sense, but since doing so I have now another message from O2 stating "you will only pay up to £1 for using data today" If I do get another £1 charge applied today, I will take Charlie's advice and get someone to contact O2 for me. I should have been able to work this one out for myself if I had checked the settings before I asked for help. I apologise to everyone who answered and appreciate the help offered.

Something rather strange has happened. I have now received a message fromO2 which reads " you have used £1 worth of data on your phone today, but you won't be charged for any more. your daily allowance of 50Mb runs out at midnight" I then checked my settings on the phone and found the wifi had been turned on despite my turning it off this morning and setting it to manual swith on only. I am baffled.
