Either purchase a bolt on for some more data allowance or switch Data Network off so as to not use anymore data and stop incurring costs.
O2 do not charge for any data overuse on pay monthly when you reach 500mb they apply throttling to your account making it useless.

What will happen if I use all my data?
You will be notified via text message in real time. We’ll send a text message when you’ve used 80% of your bundle advising you to track your usage via My O2 and reminding you to use Wi-Fi. We’ll send a further text when you’ve used 100% of your bundle asking that you buy more data via My O2 or use Wi-Fi until your next bill date. If you don’t purchase additional data and continue to use the O2 network, your service will be slowed down.

If you have a wi-fi router at home you could use that to save data.
You can follow your charges in MyO2, data is added at midnight each day.

What phone is it?
If you think you will run out of allowance each month (or was it new toy syndrome?) then might be worth adding a bolt on. You could also use Wifi at home as Perksie has said or switch data on and off only when you want to use it as some apps will use data to update in the background.

As a more long term resolution perhaps think of looking at a larger data allowance if your on payg.
Pay monthly is different T&C.
Some handsets have a data on off toggle in its settings.

@mi5 agreed if you buy the bolton but no cost if you do not and it is so slow how could anybody use much data on the throttled speed so if you purchased the bolton only a small bit would be clawed back.
But the op specifically asked "Im worried as i dont want to go running up a massive bill"
At the old rate of £3 a mb when over usage that would rack up a charge but as o2 nolonger do that no massive bill.
