So, my contract is due to end 17th august. I'm wondering after that date will my bill automatically be less? If not then what must I do? Will I be able to leave wherever i want after this if I'm only paying airtime plans and no device payment plan? I dont want to be tied to O2 or this contract any more but I'm also not in a rush to get a new phone just yet.

You'll need to upgrade to a sim only to save money https://www.o2.co.uk/shop/sim-cards/sim-only-deals#deviceType=phone&contractLength=P12M

Assuming you are on refresh, you'll just pay for the airtime and your contract will continue on a rolling 30'day basis so you can cancel or upgrade at anytime Guide: How does O2 Refresh work?

If you have 2 direct debits each month it's refresh, if one payment it's a standard contract.

I only have 1. How should it work with a standard contract?

Ok do I literally just order through the site and it will automatically take over from my current DD and contract? I'd like to keep my current number and be free to end whenever I like

@Freakoutlaura You can check your MyO2 page to see what offers are available to you: http://www.o2.co.uk/myo2 and yes, you can keep your number: https://www.o2.co.uk/help/phones-sims-and-devices/how-to-keep-your-mobile-number

If and when you do choose to end your contract, this guide shows you how: https://community.o2.co.uk/t5/How-to-Guides/Cancelling-your-contract-An-updated-guide/ba-p/1234852

I DO NOT WORK FOR O2

Upgrade through your MyO2 but the sim only option may not appear until you contract ends.
You will automatically keep your number and the same SIM card if you just upgrade that way.
Your new tariff will change on your sim inside 24 hours.

Ok thanks. When I check my upgrade options they are all device plans. On the 17th when my device plan is complete will it show me more options for sim only on a 30 day rolling contract?
