Yes you have to give 30 days notice. They will then send you a finalised bill at your next billing date.

Ok how can I tell when my next payment will be made, it says the next bill date is the 13th November but it does not say when the payment will be made

Payment date is always 14 days after the billing date so would be the 27th November.

ok so that would mean if i cancelled my account tomorrow I would still be charged again. The problem is I would like to switch to a contract that is still from o2 but is being sold on carphone warehouses website, that comes with a new phone . So to avoid being charged twice this coming month I would have to wait until past the 27th November to order the new phone?

Are you wanting a new contract or just a new phone at a lower price than a SIM free would cost ?

If so I think I would phone O2 before cancelling and have a chat with them

I would basically like to switch from the sim only contract I am on at the moment which is £10.50 a month for 100 mins and unlimited texts to a 24 month contract, still on o2, which is also £10.50 a month for 50 mins and unlimited texts and you get a Sony Xperia Miro for free. It's frustrating as I would be paying the exact same amount but I would like to get the new phone as soon as possible, instead of having to wait 30 days to avoid being charged for both
