@ jonsie did a good thread on this a few years ago http://community.o2.co.uk/t5/Discussions-Feedback/Monthly-Payments/td-p/97838 a standing order can only be used for fixed ammounts a pay monthly bill can vary so direct debit / card payment the only options

As far as I know, only direct debits can be set up.

Standing Orders are only useful for fixed payments, but there is every chance your monthly bill to O2 could vary, so the Direct Debit route is preferred.
