Whenever I make a call or receive one it is always scrambled and I cannot understand or hear what the other party says.

Have you checked here O2 Service Status ?

If nothing showing, report issue through MyNetwork app https://www.o2.co.uk/apps/my-network

Network issues O2 Service Status

Try swapping your sim to another phone and another sim in your phone to see if the problem stays with phone or sim and check the local network status on the link above,

Well I know it’s not the phone which is less than a year old and was working perfectly with my previous sim when I lived overseas. I ordered a new sim and all seemed ok today until I was 5 minutes into a call and all went mad again. I despair. In all my years I have never had such grief.
