Wifi extra is a sim driven connection - the only way to get rid id to un-register from the service.
I have no affiliation whatsoever with O2 or any subsidiary companies. Comments posted are entirely of my own opinion. This is not Customer Service so we are unable to help with account specific issues.

Am I right in thinking customer service have to do this or can it be done online?

You are automatically signed up for the service if you have a compatible phone. Turning off wifi will limit you to mobile data only but there is no way to over-ride wifi extra and select a normal wifi hotspot without removing your device from the wifi extra service.

Yes I realise you will only be able to use mobile data by disabling wifi. What I'm asking is if there is a link anywhere to derigister or is it a question of having to call customer service Rolleys

I assume them my 950 is not on the list of compatible devices. I'm on mobile so will have a look in more detail later.
