Not sure what going on there.
Which part of London you are having problems with?
An incident like that would be a major outage, this forum would be inundated and would be sufficient to make national news.
So for that reason, I doubt London's O2 coverage has suffered a major outage which means its either a localised issue or your handsets at fault.

I’ve just checked Vodafone coverage map and they have advised that they will be doing some work in Loddon in next 3 months, normally o2 isn’t far behind as they have a network share agreement. I’m not saying it’s going to happen, but here’s hoping.
Coverage on on all networks isn’t great tho so you need to choose which one is best for you
but o2 doesn’t have a mast near to Loddon
O2 haven’t hid that they don’t have great coverage too there from there own coverage checker.
