Put the sim into a phone and register it for MyO2.
You will then be able to track it and top up through the app.

I cannot see incoming messages so could not register this SIM online.

Tried by phone but one of the security questions is "what is your balance?"

I tried topping up by £10 hoping that I would be given a new balance but unfortunately  this proved not to be the case.

Yes that works.  Full procedure is as follows.

Find out who in your circle of family and friends has a phone that will take a full size sim.

Get phone delivered.

Charge up long disused phone.

Remove burglar alarm from wall to take out sim

Cancel tamper alarm before it disturbs the neighbours too much.

Send texts to people who get the alarm messages on their phones telling them to ignore messages.

Recharge phone battery that has now gone flat.

Put sim in phone.

Log on to O2 and get code sent to sim.

Use code to register details.

Remove sim from phone and put back in burglar alarm.

Return phone to owner.

O2 could not have made this easier.
