My friend is in Canada & has a Nokia Acer that was bought as unlocked ( it definitely is as I checked it with various sims including an O2 one before sending it to him!!). However, he is unable to receive or send text messages. He has no problem with his old O2 phone but that is now hit & miss whether it charges or not. Is there any way that we can sort his new phone as it is a cheap way for me to send him text messages & for him to send me the occasional one?

Is his network in Canada having issues.
Does the phone frequency bands run on what his network uses ?
Ask him to ring his network and check his account and service and perhaps get a new sim card.
And to double check his messaging centre and settings within his phone.

Ask him to try another network provider rather than using auto-select, set it to manual.
