Put it in a watertight (I mean airtight) tin, store in a cool place and it will be even better next year......

Only works if it's a fruit cake! Also I take no responsibility for anything going wrong.
My wedding cake (in three tiers) was ok to eat after the top two tiers were stored in a tin for 18 months.
