So Croatia drag themselves on to play England. Hmmm, with a tired team it is England's best chance of making a final ever. But this just on the BBC may dampen enthusiasm:

Though sad to see Russia exit, it would have been a thrashing by England with the worst case scenario of Raheem Sterling actually scoring!

I'm pleased Russia are out. Although their fans have behaved impeccably up to now, I doubt that would remain the case if we went on to beat them. Banana

It’s been a remarkable World Cup so far, with Brazil, Germany, Argentina, and Spain all failing to make the last four (surely a first?), and I was interested listening to Alan Shearer making the case that you can only play what’s in front of you, by admitting that he couldn’t remember who England had played in the early rounds of the 1966 World Cup. I had to look it up, but their route to the final certainly looked a lot harder back then, with Uruguay, Mexico, and France in their group, and then having to beat Argentina, Portugal, and of course West Germany in the knockout stages.

If you discount the Belgium game (having already made the knockout stages), then England haven’t really been tested yet. But that’s not to play down their achievements this time around, and Gareth Southgate has done a fantastic job of getting the best out of this young team. The pressure may eventually tell, but they’re still in the tournament, and sometimes your name is on that trophy.

They made a point last night that more players in this squad haven't all started in the top tier of football.

They may be there now but their route (for many) has started in really lower tier teams. They listed a few and mentioned Coventry as one of the teams.

Without going through Wiki for all 23 squad members, neither my husband or I can think which player this was.

Probably one who hasn't played yet...joy

From the Telegraph ::

......Jordan Henderson, who cites his loan to Coventry City as a key moment in his “progress as a player”.

Most promising youngsters are sent out on loan to toughen them up and to get 1st team experience. At an early age a lot of them can then challenge the highly paid overseas stars brought in to appease shareholders and fans. Sadly, many of them languish in the lower leagues, although doing something they love, at a fraction of the rewards were they given a chance in the top league. David Beckham was loaned out to Preston but it inspired him to greater things. So that system does work but it's mainly down to the players determination.
