Well this looks interesting, I wonder how long it'll be in r&d, and how long until it's realised?
Other implications are electric car batteries, now this would make ecars much more appealing imo.

It has great promise - it's a aluminium anode with a graphite cathode battery with an electrolyte that is a salt that is liquid at room temperature, so the battery can be flexible. Life cycle is predicted at up to 7500 charge cycles without any loss of capacity, so a huge improvement over current batteries Li ion batteries - not to mention improved safety aspects over Li ion batteries.
Aluminium is muc cheaper that Lithium so cost benefits could be huge too - however the new battery can not match the performance of current Li ion batteries, producing about half the voltage, so some work is needed before it could be considered a viable replacement - still it's early days for the new battery, and it looks very promising.
