3.14159265359... No, not that type of pie*! It's British Pie Week** (7-13th March).

I'm talking about the good stuff. That one-syllable, baked dish of pastry and filling. Flaky, crispy, soft, doughy, sweet, savoury, thick, thin. Apples and pears; steaky and kidney. Beef and gravy; chicken and mushroom. Red sauce, brown sauce(!?) and good ol' gravy. I could go on, but alas, we must move on.

I love a good pie. Not sure if you could tell. So, I had to make sure we celebrated this week properly on the community. And how do we do that? Well, I will only ask the members to do one thing:

Simply, treat yourself to a pie this week 🥧

Make it. Bake it. Cut corners with puff pastry (the only way, in my opinion). Or, get a posh one from a local restaurant. I'd probably be happiest to hear about the store-bought pies, covered in instant gravy (you know the brand I'm thinking of).

So, please, do that. Enjoy a pie. And let us know how you get on. Even share a photo if you will 📸.

For me, it's a toss-up between my mother's corned beef pie and stewed steak tin gravy, or, the humble apple pie. Maybe, I'll have to make both. Expect photos and reviews at some point this week in the comments below.

I hope you manage to participate! Looking forward to hearing about your favourites and seeing some photos. And sorry if you don't like pie. But, I'll leave you with the beginning of an old famous rhyme...

Sing a song of sixpence,
A pocket full of rye,
Four and twenty blackbirds
Baked in a pie.

When the pie was opened
The birds began to sing—
Wasn't that a dainty dish
To set before the king?

*Search "pi" on Google and you can play a game with the 𝛑 symbol calculator.

**Invented by the Egyptians, apparently! Read a short(crust) history of pies.

Sausage pie for savoury, yum. My Mum made a smashing one in a square tin, great for picnics too.

Apple pie, or rhubarb pie for sweet - lovely with custard!

And the piece de résistance: home made lemon meringue pie, with fresh eggs and lemon base and fluffy, baked meringue top (firm to touch, but soft and gooey).

Looking at that Lemon Meringue pie @pgn , reminds me of my sister making a similar one but changing the ingredients to make Key Lime pie. Beautiful.

She was 9 years older than me but we were best friends. We agreed that I got the star for savoury food, including cooking joints of meat. She got 3 stars for her wonderful array of sweets and puddings. On my 40th we had a big party at the hospital social club. I cooked all the savoury food, including Chili con Carne and a Chicken curry (as well as a massive array of salad items,) whilst she brought about 10 different sweet dishes including lashings of fresh cream. What a night that was (Particularly when the male stripper turned up) 😂 😂

Wasn't expecting that ending then, @Cleoriff 🤣! Sounds like you and your sister were a cooking dream team, though.

And brilliant, @pgn, totally forgot about meringue (one of my favourite things for a dessert). Got to have it every Christmas with Eton mess 👌.

Funnily enough we have some lemon meringue pie last night!

I made one for a family BBQ a few years back and the lemon was quite tart.
My aunt made the next one and said hers was as strong - not the bit I had!

Who knew we could manage to talk so much about pie 😂? I mentioned the British Pie Week to my friend last week, and they sent me some photos yesterday of their belated efforts. A potato and leek pie, with vegan crème fraîche.

Well, not pie but wheaten bread, with buttermilk - S#2 and I have a day without Mum to fill, so we practiced using the recipe he made in his HE class at school a couple of weeks back:

A slice, with a smear of butter, will go nicely with a large cup of tea shortly methinks 👌

Looking good, @pgn 👌. Use to love anything, even a plain digestive, with a smear of butter on top. Can imagine the bread went perfect with a cup of tea.

Does make me think in regards to what determines if something is a pie or not 🤔? Pastry? Filling? Is a sandwich a pie? Or, have I not had my morning coffee yet 😂? Probably, the latter... Thanks for sharing!
