When i try to call i'm told 'Not registered on network'. When i try to use data i'm told 'insert simcard to access network services'. This is the 1st time it's happened, i use a samsung galaxy S8 and i got the simcard 3 or 4 months ago.

Try another sim in your phone to see if the fault is with phone or sim.
