i take it back, switched my phone from Dual mode to GSM only and it's working just fine...

In my experience (after more than 5 years on contract with O2) it's always an issue with O2's network and not the handset. And customer service will always tell you it's the handset.
I've yet to come across anyone there having the remotest interest in listening to or acting on reports of faulty towers etc. I will be speaking to them yet again at lunchtime and asking why they don't introduce 'service status' and fault reporting links on their main web page.
Given their large spread of smartphones they really do need to resolve their issues with patchy 3G coverage and poor service uptime.
