the answer is 5 days, talk to seven different people, repeat yourself several times even though the text of the conversation is still visible on screen.
And I thought technology was meant to make things quicker, seems like a lot of chat operators justifying their jobs to me!

It normally takes 7 days from the day you contact O2, for us to transfer your number to pay and go. The reason for this is because we also need to send out a free pay and go sim card to you for your pay monthly number to transfer onto, once your contract sim card disconnects. This can take 3-5 days to reach you through the post.
If you are unhappy about the wait, another option is that you can visit an O2 shop and get a pay and go sim card from there (please note they will only be able to give you a sim card if you top up by a minimum of £10 there and then in the store) and eitherchat to us online when you get home or call O2 from the store to give them the sim card details and we can arrange the migration of your number within just 24 hours for you?
