My 2 year contract is complete and for the first time ever when upgrading, I have been told that I am unable to upgrade online and have to contact O2 by telephone.
Can anyone explain why I should be put to the hassle of hanging about on the telephone when it is much faster to upgrade via the website as I have done for years?

It would seem the mobile companies set a precedent years ago offering renewal discounts.
People are now assuming that these would last forever but with the current economic situation they obviously can't be handed out as they were in the past.
Most companies I have paid for 10 years or more for other services give me nothing at all, should I complain?

Not at all. If you are happy with what you recieve.
However, these other companies, are they in highly competative, easy to move custom sectors? If you think at difficulties around changing energy suppliers etc, they are regulated, and have to control profit margins to remain competative. the telecommunication sector is a very consumer focussed sector, relying often on positive customer experience to enhanse reputation. it doesnt suffer the same distribution issues as other sectors.
irrespective, the level i have come to expect and welcome from o2 has been squashed in my most recent experience.

Let's hope you will find the ultimate company who will provide what you need.

I am in the same boat, they want more from me than Tesco for the same phone and more mins/data, and O2 will not even match it, they told me just go to Tesco.....so much for loyalty!!!!

Well said, I have started looking around and others are giving far better deals.
