My partner transferred from O2 to EE the new handset came with of course new phone and number he transferred old number to new handset , calls go to new handset fine via old number but texts I send are registered as being sent to the new number and go to new handset , surly this number should not be able to receive texts if the old number has transferred? Can you explain this ?

It could be whats known as a partial port - you would need to call CS on 202 to get them to check and your partner may need to do the same with Orange.
I assume this is sms messages and not iMessages?

Historically there always seems to be problems with porting in and out of the Orange (EE) network, however, it does take a while to settle fully.
How long has it been since the transfer started?

I think we've had this before whereby the number has to be deleted from the Apple account?

If it's normal sms messages it will just be a port issue - If iMessages it could be an apple server issue.

What number do text messages FROM him come across as?

Just get him to check in Settings >Phone >My Number and check it is showing the correct number in there. If not, change it then turn off iMessage, restart phone and turn iMessage back on again.
