Really interesting article on the verge this morning, discusses the "Co engineered by Leica" Huawei P9.
All stems from the fact that the hardware inside the camera is actually not even made by Leica.

I had a play with the P9 last weekend and to be fair was impressed by the camera. Truthfully tho, it's not THAT great and it falls a bit short of the huge claims made during the announcement.

Reading this statement in that article

You probably already guessed that the Leica name is a branding exercise rather than a legitimate technological partnership.

I will ask...what the heck is a 'branding exercise'? Seems illegal to me.

Absolutely ridiculous. Leica had nothing to do with what's in the camera at all. Stand back and wait for other 'branding exercises' of this nature.....

Leica and Huawei said last week....

To reiterate that they definitely worked together on the P9 and it wasn't a simple pay-for-prestige effort. Apparently though the Leica option has always been there: you just match a given spec for minimum optical performance and Leica hands you its rubber stamp

Personally I think if it was indeed a Leica lens...the phone would be a lot more expensive??
