Say Goodbye to Unlimited Data Tariffs

Anonymous

Looks like O2 are going to follow AT&T's lead by getting rid of the Unlimited Data tariffs for smartphones and iPhones.

Doesn't even look like they're goig to do an unlimited data bolt on!

This could get very expensive!

Just found this on Which Website

my main thread....

viewtopic.php?p=246656#246656
Hello all.
Im new & just signed up becasue of my outrage about the new removal of unlimited
data on 02. my last bill showed 27 Gig of data in less than 30 days so how is the
new 500meg plan going to help me? i could use all that in 30mins & thats supposed to last me a month. JOKE. im leaving o2 now & taking both my contract to another
provider.

I think we've just found the culprit whose over usage has forced us to lose the unlimited data, also the slow 3G due to 27gb being sucked up in a month!!!!

wow 27gb of data ...... i didnt think it was possible to reach that even in a month ......must be streaming video and downloading files 24/7

this person is not going to find a provider to meet his needs tongue

(im sure if any provider knew abt the usage - they will put an asbo on the person!)

I wonder how many people O2 have that are out of contract but hanging on for the IPhone 4 to be released.
I guess its anyone who bought a 3G on either an 18 or 24 months contract and I suspect thats going to be quite a few.
I'm certainly one of those and my custom will rely heavily on what deal I get offered to stay aswell as what tarriff prices are like etc.

That's me - I've been with o2 for about 10 years, have a 3G and have been waiting for months for the iPhone 4.

I've just found out that not only will I lose unlimited data but my international texting (4 texts coming out of my monthly allowance rather than paying for them) will be lost if I go for a new iPhone. The international texting is the only reason I'm with o2 as I spend about 50% of the month abroad with work. I'm fuming

Ok which network has the best deal for the iPhone 4? I almost certainly will not be continuing with o2 on principal. Smiley Mad Smiley Mad

Instead of being childish and spitefull like that, why not buy the handset direct from Apple and continue with your current tarrif you have?
This is only for customer's accepting a new contract or changing tarrif.

Childish and spiteful? Why would I want to be loyal to o2? They've done nothing for me and tbh their service hasn't been the best over the years, now I'm being told I can have any phone I want EXCEPT the iPhone on my existing contract - what a con!

I don't particularly fancy paying £499 for a handset, this completely defeats the object - I might as well get the iphone at a reduced price on a new contract and take the hit with international texts.

Anyone would think I was the only one on here who said I would be leaving o2!

You're speaking as if you're not being given choices, but when you can go and purchase the phone direct from able and keep your existing contract that's no use because it doesn't suit you.
You want O2 to provide you with your existing contract on the new iPhone 4 AND substidise the cost of the handset at the same time by offering you the handset for free / reduced rate...but because they won't do this it seems like you're spitting the dummy with them.

Sounds like you're being more unreasonable than O2 to me

Whilst I don't agree I can understand O2's decision. What you have to bear in mind is that there has been an unforseen explosion in the requirement for data use. Take my Store Manager for example. Once upon a time he had a Sony Ericsson W990, despite it being 3G, he used it for calls, texts and the occasional music download-very little data demand. About two months ago (and boy don't we all know it...!!) he upgraded to an iPod 3Gs. Result: Data Useage with a WHITE HOT VENGANCE!. All his emails are sent and received on his iPhone-almost completly taking over from his Desktop and Laptop, he downloads all his weekly reports onto it,uses Spotify for music to and from work, compliles and sends reports using photo's etcSo his data consumption has gone from virtually zero to hundreds of times more what it was.

He is fortunate insomuch that he likes and works in the Nottingham area where the O2 coverage and capacity has been good and has recently improved thanks to the activating of several new transmatters via an O2/Vodafone network inprovement in and around Nottingham.

But imagine that being replicated multiple thousands of times across the network?

Now in fairness he is only taking what's on offer but it doesn't take a genius to work out that O2's 3G is going to be under strain especially in places like London.

Some of the fault is with O2, it should have had more capacity in place but it is also in an invidious position because it just cannot go on building masts willy-nilly.

And the T-Mobile/Orange/Three (?) merger is throwing the fat in the fire, nobody is quite sure what's going on.

So yes it's an annoyance but an inevitable action i'm afraid

Isnt alot of this around the 3G network standard which doesnt have the data capacity expected with the data usage of smart phones?

According to wikimedia 14mbps is the max on the 3g network, obviously this would be shared amongst all users on the mast.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3g

When/if 4G standard comes around and masts upgraded, this may ease the problem of data usage and a return to unlimited data usage.
