Very clever tactic refunding by cheque. Who in their right mind is going to travel to their bank to pay in a cheque for £3.90 it would cost more in petrol than the refund is worth. Quite genius really send a cheque that will never get cashed. Why can't o2 just refund to account is it because it would actually be a financal lose because you would have to payout compared to uncashed cheques.

Rubbish. If you had an active direct debit, the refund would have gone there - advice on contract closure is to leave the DD active for at least 2 billing cycles, as an example.
If it was a refund requested in MyO2, there is a section for adding in a payment card in My O2, Wallet I think it is - the refund would have gone back to the card registered with O2 if your account is still active.
So perhaps look at why O2 took the only recourse - posting you a cheque.
And many banks allow you to scan a cheque on their mobile app if it is below a certain value, for deposit. Does your bank not offer that service? £3.90 would certainly qualify.
So no clever tactics really, remember this is VMO2 we are talking about, @too1ie.

My bank and building society allow me to scan a cheque.
However, via the My O2 app, I requested a refund of £400+ It was in my bank the following week.
Surprisingly, I had no communication from them at all. I just noticed it was in my bank and when I checked My O2, it was no longer there. Very impressed. 😂
