Personal Hotspot/Tethering iPhone 4 in non 3G coverage area

I am getting moved onto the new tariff that allows tethering on 3 April. Because I want to be able to occasionally use my wifi only iPad in a non wifi area, so the new tariff is ideal for me has it works out cheaper than to purchase a 3G & wifi iPad (which is £100 more expensive than the wifi only version plus the cost of a data tariff for it too).
I was wondering, is it possible to still Personal Hotspot/Tether when you are in a non 3G coverage area, i.e. EDGE, GPRS coverage only?

It's the tariff with 300 minutes, unlimited texts, 20 free MMS messages, with the iPhone all rounder bolt on. £37 per month.

If you think it is slow on an iphone 4 try it on a 3GS. Wifi tethering is possible on gprs, but you may as well pour yourself a Guiness while you wait for it to connect.

The tethering/personal hotspot is a handy feature to have, but I wouldn't advise using it when in a GPRS only coverage area. 3G, EDGE yes, but GPRS only when it were important.

Has far as I know tethering is the same thing as personal hotspot. In the 4.3 iOS update, the entry for tethering in the settings on the iPhone 4 was replaced with Personal Hotspot. I have used personal hotspot a number of times this week, so it definitely is working now slight_smile

The new tariff options, with inclusive tethering on the data bolt on, went live on March 29th, mine changed on the 5th April and I've used tethering a few times with great success already.

Don't worry I just tried it out of interest on my GS after you asked the question. With 3G I agree it is great and the wifi connection works as well as my local pubs wifi!

Give customer services a call and ask them to change the date for you, they could have it changed by tomorrow, but your next bill will be pro rata, ask them to explain that before they do it as it can make the bill higher, but can also be lower, depends what you are changing from/to and how much of this months allowance you have already used ( the less the better)
