2G and 3G Service Interuption
We have identified a connectivity issue on our network which has affected both 2G and 3G service in parts of East London, North London and Kent. Customers in these areas may be experiencing difficulty in making or receiving mobile calls, texts or using data. Our Engineering team are working on the problem as a priority in order to resume full service as soon as possible.
So dont worry too much...as long as it comes back. So...yep Im worried tongue

O2 Network is still down - And to be quite honest their attitude when I called them totally stank!!
It was a case of 'So what? Deal with it'
I'm in Romford.

My experience and take on the events that have now been going on for 12 hours.
I live in North London.
Last night (16th May) at about 11pm I was checking a London Underground Tube App on my iPhone. Mid way through looking up a route I got the message that was something like: ‘Could not activate cellular data network’ and I could do no more. This has happened in the past so not to worry I thought.
However what did bother me was not only had I lost 3G but also Edge and the very much slower GPRS (2G) data/voice service – This was a first and all had now was full signal and just ‘O2’.
Well this was over an hour before 12:50am (when O2 Status checker says the fault was identified).
Since then I was not able to make calls, send texts etc. Though since 11am I have been able to text and can receive (but not make) phone calls.
I called O2 this morning and spoke to someone who said it was a large outage affecting north London, east London and much of Kent. I did a search of their site and found this forum.
This network outage seems pretty serious and is not tied to specific masts but seems that many masts in north and east London and Kent (Sussex oddly gets a mention to) must all come into some kind of ‘hub’ where if one could imagine the cellular network interfaces with the cable phone network and O2 can place your call to say a BT number, or an Orange customer to patch their call to your handset.
I am guessing. But the point is if this affects such a huge arrear (I’d imagine a good few hundred thousand possible over a million customers) it must be a very very serious problem. Sadly O2 like all big companies will not likely tell us the true extent of the issue and because they have no estimate of a fix clearly says what ever went wrong might well not be software but hardware related...and if is..trying to fix that would take far longer (I guess a day or more to get everyone back up and running) clearly they will want to get voice working, then things like voice mail and then finally data services.

I'm in East London and have noticed that I have signal bars now and can surf the net on my handset. Still can't make calls however, not tried sending a text yet......Nope, signal's gone!!!

I've been getting similar here in Romford... Signal bars seem to appear for a few seconds, maybe as long as ten seconds, then they disappear again and nothing for a couple of hours

I havent noticed signals popping up, but since they aren't staying up i dont suppose ill worry about that. What does worry me, is that even when its fixed there may still be problems and then someone - customers - have to call up o2, get them to admit something wrong (after the bits about trying another phone and another sim) and then wait for them to send an engineer to fix that and so on and so on.
Id love for it to just all work like they flip a switch at their end once its all done and its all back up...i just have my doubts.

Found a funny article i thought id share with you in our darkest hour...
"O2, while not exactly apologising for the network downtime, has posted plenty of information on its blog, saying: "At the moment there is no estimated time for this to be fixed, however we're working on getting our network up and running as soon as possible and expect it to be today"
source: techradar

also interesting since they have a theory why networks keep geting raided by professional crims (happened to voda a while back)
"The obvious conclusion is that there's some kind of valuable nuclear element involved in maintaining a mobile phone network, which a gang of thieves is hoping to use in order to make a clapped out old car travel through time. Yes, that's probably it."
