How old is the laptop? What you might find is that the touchpad is ever so slightly warped which is causing it to move around. Try a simple test: disable the touchpad but make sure you connect a mouse first!
Not quite sure where it exists on anything other than WinXP as it was in the taskbar - icon like a square with two smaller squares on top of it.

thank you for replying @sheepdog you always talk sense ... laptop will be about 5 years old at an educated guess ... I don't have the icon you describe ... my gut feeling after various people's input is that it's the installing free Windows 10, then un-installing it , then installing it free for good which has caused things to 'wobble'
I'm off to take the laptop to the nice man at his own laptop business in town to see if he can 'tidy things up a bit' to stop the cursor jumping around & loosing of text
Enjoy your day Sheepdog

Hi, just to post an update
Have got laptop back from nice man proprietor of laptop business
He also connected it to the printer, which I could not have done eg could not find disk
Touchpad mouse is now disabled
Windows 10 now safely installed
£35 cash is good price
& he can also get me a tablet with his contacts ... after I'm off for a tech play at cpw at a time suitable to me, if I'm pounced upon I shall state I'm browsing

thank you @Cleoriff it was strange without it ... it's no secret on the community that I have bi-polar type 2, have had poor mental health for many years & it will be with me until I leave this our earth ... the point I wish to make is that the laptop is my window on the world particularly when I'm unable to get outside of the house
I learn tech stuff on here
I have made good friends on here
Facebook keeps me in touch with school friends, trad jazz / swing friends / musicians etc
