Discussions about O2 and age verification

Just received a text from TPTB saying I need to confirm I'm over 18 to view adult material. Until then, it'll remain blocked on my phone. I don't have a credit card so I'll need to do this in store. Just wondering, I have no particular desire to view pornographic material or register to flirt websites on my phone but if I don't have this ban lifted, will it affect my general day-to-day browsing in any way? Otherwise, I won't bother.
Secondly, when did this come about? Never needed to confirm my age in the past. And why couldn't they have sorted this in store when I bought the phone?

Age verification is nothing to do with which phone you have.

Customer Services appear to be able to remove the block as confirmed by users of this forum in this very thread. They also appear to be advising others that they cannot do this.
With the number of people affected, the last thing they want is a further increase in calls to the Customer Services as this affects their SLAs and all calls into them cost money and by that I don't mean the cost of the call.
Why do you think they have SLAs on cutting call times, calls answered in an hour, cutting wait times etc?
Why do you think they outsourced it and tried to make it automated in the first place?
If you have an issue with them blocking content then call their standard customer service line and raise your complaint, escalate if need be and see if they unblock you.
Also, does any O2 member of staff wish to provide any details on the suspected server issue that caused all this?

I am leaving o2 due to this.
I was not notified this would be put in place in either writing or text message (And if this was in fact due to their terms as they claim, they are supposed to notify you in writing).
It ** IS ** the parents responsibility to control the content their children are viewing. If o2 feels it needs to provide a mechanism to do this, they should have an OPT OUT of adult content and inform new customers of the availability of parent tools.
Like I said, I'm off. I'm sick of corporations telling me what I can and can't do, what I need their permission for etc. If I did this to my clients I would have NO customer base and be out of business in a couple of months. It's sickening that it's forced on us.

I am highly offended by this age verification malarky.
I'm a 23 year old woman and I can't even shop for underwear on my iPhone unless o2 approves of my choice in shop.
La Senza is blocked, yet M&S lingerie is fine? La Senza being a shop that sits comfortably in my local shopping centre next to Clarks shoes and a couple of doors down from Waterstones. And when I tried to access a local lingerie shop (which I didn't know has since shut) the website redirected to a website called "sexy directory" and this loaded fine. The things they sold on that website would never be seen in La Senza!
I don't think I'd be as annoyed if they'd notified me about it and I could actually shop for clothing of my own gender without it being dictacted where I should go. The blocks are so hit and miss, it is pointless. I chose an iPhone because I wanted to be able to browse the internet without restriction..
It's impossible to police every single personal blog (i.e. livejournal and tumblr) where people can post pictures of naked bodies so why even bother?
Anyone suggest where I can complain to thats higher than customer services?

All operators are now doing this so complaining may not help, you can read what it's all about here:

I can't think why having an iPhone would make any difference though.

See you say all operators are doing this, my boyfriend is with Vodafone and can load the La Senza website just fine.
And I chose an iPhone for the large screen and almost full website functionality it gets compared to my N95 which had a small screen and often loaded websites in a text version. That was all a bit pointless now I'm blocked on half of them.

It's also worth noting I can load nuts magazine website (where I can see a picture of a woman with her nipples out) but I can't load the cosmopolitan magazine website.
ETA: I take that back. Nuts is blocked now.

Interesting still is the sex education website...
http://www.brook.org.uk/
... was blocked when the filter kicked in.
Brook responded personally on Twitter and then O2 unblocked it within 24 hours.
This morning, it appears to be blocked again and Brook are having to request on Twitter for it to be unblocked for a second time.
