Discussions about O2 and age verification

Just received a text from TPTB saying I need to confirm I'm over 18 to view adult material. Until then, it'll remain blocked on my phone. I don't have a credit card so I'll need to do this in store. Just wondering, I have no particular desire to view pornographic material or register to flirt websites on my phone but if I don't have this ban lifted, will it affect my general day-to-day browsing in any way? Otherwise, I won't bother.
Secondly, when did this come about? Never needed to confirm my age in the past. And why couldn't they have sorted this in store when I bought the phone?

How is that classified as spam? You have a link in your signature.

I do have a link in my signature and it is to a broadband related site where O2 customers, and others. can go for help.
Your link was just plain advertising (spam)

Fair enough, I was just using my email signature. My apologies, I wasn't intending to spam. It seems my account was deactivated, simply telling me to remove the link would've sufficed. Anyway, I've signed up again and have not added any links.
My question still stands though. Why is O2 blocking content from our website? We have no adult material on our site and since the purpose of the project is to allow people to share information about local food we are having our content strangled.

I sent a private message to one of the O2 people here earlier today, in addition to several tweets to @O2, and have received this response:
'I completely agree with you that ‘Google Translate’ is not harmful for children below 18 years and therefore should not be restricted. We have already flagged this from our side to the relevant team to be removed from the 18+ category. This should be done soon, although I cannot promise any timescales but it should be done in the next 24-48 hours.'
Can I now wait and see in hope...?

Opera workaround doesn't help with our native iPhone app that's broken by the filtering though. 😕

Can I just raise a question for the O2 people on here?
I have Pay as you go Mobile Broadband. I paid my £1 to have the bar lifted and would like to know how the £2.50 will be repaid?
It didn't come off my payment for 2GB of data that I bought yesterday.
Any answers?

I don't know how you will get credited but monthly contract users will be refunded on the next bill(s). Now the catch, I.m thinking they may deduct the VAT in which case the refund would be more like £2.10. Hope I'm wrong.

Domestic User on pay as you go computer mobile broadband dongle (and am no tecky!)
The O2 Age Verification must be one of the worst business decisions of any international company in recent months.
Having up to now provided a perfectly acceptable service I've been patient and given O2 several days to get shut of this feature, given the what should have been obvious anticipated groundswell of negativity towards it.....but oh no!....
Just tried again and it's still there!....Now I'm a generally very mild mannered sort of person but this has just really wound me up!
I'm not going to even entertain giving it a go, in fact have made my mind up that later today I'll visit another service provider and obtain a dongle and get on with my life...
Yes, there's generally only 2GB of download with others for £15 compared with O2's 3GB, but what's your Human Rights for £1-25/week?
Given that if your computer is family-shared, there's settings for individual users/Google safe search and the likes of AOL child-protection friendly stuff, is this just Big Brother gone mad, or simply a data collection experiment?
Although it's hard to see the purpose....even though I'm on PAYG, I've bought usage for the last 15 months using my personal debit card, so O2 know exactly who I am! :womanindifferent:
O2, you've blown it for me this time, not only a poor business decision but amateurish.....reminds me why I changed my mobile 'phone service provider last time round.....

Oof, this has been managed in such a cack-handed way by O2.
I pay my bill every month by credit card. So to be asked to provide a credit card to 'prove' that I'm 18 seems utterly redundant and pointless, and a waste of everyone's time. Would a simple database query to identify which customers O2 already have a credit card for have been too much to ask for?

Just to follow up, I've tried Google Translate again, for the first time today. I can access the page! Phew.
But this can happen again regarding other sites, I guess, so I'll try to get my age verified by calling the customer services ... when I have time and a landline phone at hand, that is......
