I have been charged for 4 unanswered calls whilst abroad. Surely this can't be right. It has never happend before

You will be charged if your voicemail answers the call.

If outside the EU, then that is correct, and has been the case for at least the last 20 years, as you pay for the leg back to voicemail, answer it or not...
