trade phone not working

I got given a refurbished phone from o2, a trade swap for my iphone as it was cracked. (did this through my insurance). Anyway i recieved the phone and my sim card (that i used in my old iphone)  wouldn't work in it and the phone wouldn't set up. it says phone unavailable to update. ive ran it through itunes and done the update still nothing..
