upgraded to i phone 5. activated new nano sim. old phone disconnected several hours ago, but new phone not yet connected. is this normal?

If you've still got your old phone (maybe an iPhone 4/4s..) and you have a SIM adapter (little black piece of plastic that 'converts' your nano SIM to a Micro SIM) then try the SIM in your old phone. If you get No Service, then you'll need to ring O2. If you get Service, then the issue is probably with your iPhone 5.
Don't panic though, it might just be software which you can upgrade / re-install following instructions http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1414
By the way, if you're lucky, you might have got the adapter with your phone.

Keep rebooting your phone until you get signal, then try texting or calling, if no luck by tomorrow contact cs
