Hello

Senario - in the Airport (Uk side) went into settings and turned mobile data to off. Assuming that no cellular data would be there for used.  Did not change this setting until I returned to the uk.  It was Outside of the EU (Turkey) hence switching off.

Got my bill and I was charged £10 for 2 messages outside of roaming with the bolt on. (£5 each)

Obviously I queried this as I used the iPhone 14's mobile data setting.  The response was I sent a message as I was using bolt on I was Charged, but as a valuable customer o2 would wave the charge.

Very nice Customer service, but still why did I get charged.  I asked this, saying I would like to know for future and same response "sent a message, using bolt on charged the standard rate"

Apple Website and I quote "If Cellular Data is off, all data services—including email, web browsing, and push notifications—use Wi-Fi only."

How can I send a message when Mobile data is off?   I got my money back but still Its wrong.

Sending a text message has nothing to do with Mobile Data usage, and iMessage will use SMS if it cant send via data..

So am afraid the charges are correct.

- Xperia 1V - o2 and Spusu
- Pixel 8 Pro - o2 and Vodafone UK

You message would have been sent as an sms which invokes the daily travel charge.

The use of WhatsApp or iMessage over wifi would prevent this

It was using the iMessage app.

Mobile data was off, so how did it send a SMS ?

I used the kill switch settings  not to connect to mobile data - so how did I get charged for mobile data?

With no data connection the phone will default to sms.

sms does not use data. sms goes over cellular network, hence the charge.
