iPhone - Change of User

I sold my iPhone 4S and the new user is in Australia.  When he uses iMessenger I get a copy of the message trail.  We had the phone unlocked by O2 and he has registered the phone with his own Apple ID.  Any solutions to stop this happening?

It can be done through iTunes or through the phones menus http://osxdaily.com/2012/01/17/reset-iphone-factory-settings/

The phone will need to be reset as a new phone as your account is still logged in somewhere on the phone.
