hi there,
i've been looking around in many forums and websites trying to find out WHY and WHAT is using up ALL my data allowance.
I've noticed that at midnight the iPhone drops off my wifi network (as its in sleep/charging) and starts to transfer data, despite making sure all apps have been properly closed/turned off?!! This seems to happen most nights and is using the majority of my allowence!
I've been sent msgs from o2 at 3.30am (waking me up!!) to inform me that my allowance is used up, obviously when i'm not using it!!! thanks...
I know i can switch off cellular data etc to make sure everything uses my wifi at home but this is a major inconvenience having to do this every day!!!
I've never had this problem with older iPhones and when the data tarifs were put into place i was assured that my personal usage was nowhere near the data allowance, and 500mb would be more than enough - which is has been until recently?!
I've checked that all notifications have been turned off, no apple diagnostics running and icloud turned off but still seems to be happening?!
From what i've read too this only seems to be an 02/iPhone problem???
Can anyone shed some light onto this, what data is moving, why and how can i stop it!?
thanks
JT

I started having this type of issue last week. I restored the phone through iTunes and set it up as a new phone and havent had a problem since. I suspect that iOS is somehow getting corrupt. Didnt recover with the backup in case that reintroduced some type of corruption.
Just adding apps back in as I need them and find most of what was installed never gets used anyway so a good clean up exercise.
May be worth a try if you have very few apps installed anyway. My contacts and emails together with calendar entries were safe as I use outlook.com so all synced back when I added the account again. Only thing I lost was text messages.

The daily data usage is updated at Midnight. It doesn't mean it is been used at Midnight....
Turning off "send diagnostic data" also helps as this seems to use a lot of data. I assume you are also aware that the iPhones drops wifi when the screen is locked so it will be using cell data then. That is an apple issue as it's written into the software......

First off, O2 update their systems at around midnight every day so what you are seeing is the full day's data usuage at midnight.
Make sure you are closing apps down properly and turn off location services. A search on here will bring up various threads and you can download apps from the store to check what exactly is using data, facebook updating can use high data.

if it is asleep but on charge wifi stays alive. It is as MI5 states the daily total added up at midnight you should se 2 amounts each day on upload and one download totals.

yes i'm aware of the wifi dropping off when the phone is in lock screen mode and yes i've turned everything off as in sending the diagnostic data etc.
my general usage of the phone hasn't changed much, I don't really bother with apps and games etc so don't understand why all of a sudden my allowance is being used up so quickly?!
* and also, if i'm mainly on wifi networks, i shouldn't be using up much of my allowance at all?!
** and if my phone is left on charge all night then it should be on wifi and not drop to 3G

If you are connected to wifi but still have mobile data switched on it will still use data

I activate airplane mode at night when my iPhone is charging.
I'm ok with not receiving calls or e mails throughout the night.
