Surprise Usage of Cellular Data

Anonymous
Not applicable

I am a very relatively low user of network data as I spend most of my time in a wi-fi zone so I was very surprised when suddenly between 22 and 24 August 2013 I discovered that I had used all of my 100 MB allowance – no unusual behaviour, no big downloads. From then on I kept the cellular data firmly off.

When my billing cycle began again on 22 September 2013 I looked to confirm that I now had a new allocation of 100MB. I imagine my surprise to see that, according to the 'My O2' app, I had already used my entire 100MB allowance even though the cellular data option had been turned off for that period.

Something bizarre is going on here. I suspect it is to do with Apple no O2 but can anyone help?

As the OP has stated that cell data was turned off I imagine it must be a system error.

CS should sort it for you.....

If you're on iOS7, then go into Settings > Mobile and scroll down .... it'll show all apps using data and how much they're consuming including at the bottom system services.
Might help isolate rogue app

When you iPhone screen goes to sleep it will auto revert from wifi to 3G.

To stop this while at home turn off mobile data and 3G.

Just remember to turn them back on when you leave home !

If you feel something is amiss then ring o2 on 202 contract or 4445 payg so they can look at your usage.

Thanks for the reply. That would be great but unfortunately I am on IOS 6.1.3 and there is no Settings > Mobile route. I check for upgrades regularly (because I think Apple might well know of the problem and be quietly solving it) but none so far for this phone. Thanks again

Thanks MI5 and Band of Brothers. As you say, cellular already off. I did have an online chate with the OS agent but they seemed to be more interested in getting me to upgrade my phone that solving the problem. I have now written to them

6.1.3 has been replaced with 7.0.2 on iphones 4 4s and 5

If you in settings see cellular and not mobile try settings> general> international> language british english. It will enable english words to replace americian words like cellular with Mobile

Logon to MyO2

Goto My Bill

Goto What I've Used

Goto UK Browse and Download

Here you will see all the data that has been used.

My bet is it is automatic app updates and/or photo stream uploading photos.

(This wil not show you WHAT has used it, but it will at least show you when and how much, then can dig deeper)

Also :

Settings > General > Usage > Cellular Usage

Does that tie up with what you see in MyO2?

The OP said they turned off cell data after they realised the allowance had gone though, so initially something was using the data.
