Is there any particular reason why the odd photo that uploads ok to my photostream in my iphone does not upload to the photostream in my ipad?

If your using the same Apple I.d then it should.

Pictures in your iCloud photo stream only stay there for a limited time.

I've used this link before to trouble shoot such issues.

Maybe take a look.
