Hi I'm looking for my son on find my iPhone . It us always on when he goes out bit for some reason tonight it hadn't been able to update his location died anyone know why?

Hi and Welcome to the Community Forum,

I assume your talking about Apples tracking of an iPhone on FindMyIphone

This will work as long as the iPhone is connected to data services and the SIM card has not been removed and the iPhone is turned on and not off due to battery depletion.

Or findmyiphone has not been turned off in the iPhones settings.
