sms message wont send to australia

Hi, basically I cant send sms messages to my friend in aus. When I send it instantly says the message 'could not send'  same also when I reply to a message.

 

I have only been with o2 for a few weeks and an using an xperia Z1 compact.

 

any help would be apprecited, syspect I am doing somthing stupid!!

This may not be the case but ensure neither of you have added one another to any blocked list.

Ask your friend to check their home network by contacting them via email , what's app etc.

Thanks for the responses.
Phone number is an aus one.
like I say I have only just got this new mobile. Previously i was with virgin using an htc desire x.
I am guessing there I a setting for sms abroad.

also I have the correct number with 0061 code

Are you able to try your sim in another phone as a process of elimination ?

Try using +61 instead of 0061

Hi @Anonymous 

This may sound silly,  but  is it possible that your SMS is greater than the allowed number of characters and has been converted to a MMS, which needs Mobile data enabled.

 

Sorry if that is "teaching granny how to suck eggs".

Another query from me. Are you sending this text to your friend via a number stored in your contact list?

I travel to Spain a lot and find if I manually input the phone number I have problems sending....whereas the text  goes through immediately if I access the same person using the number which is stored to contacts

Thanks to all for the replies.
Just tried + instead of 00, no joy.
also I am a person of few words usually, so I dont use too many charctors.

Think I will go back to Carphonewarehouse and get some advice.
