I recently joined O2 from Three, because Three are turning off their 3g network and I stopped being able to make any calls. I have a Sony Xperia 1ii which I believe is capable of 4G calling but this did not work on Three's network. Three has no 2G to fall back on.
On O2 I can use my phone again, because O2 are yet to turn off 3G. However, I would like to know that my phone still will, once this happens.
There are no options in my phone settings that allow me to enable/disable 4G calling.
I just spoke to O2's technical support. They told me to look through the settings which (as I already knew) revealed there was nothing I could turn on or off.
The advisor then asked me if I could access mobile internet whilst on the call with him. I could. He said this meant that my phone was already using 4G calling. I pointed out that while on the call, the symbol in the top menu bar is "H+" not 4G, suggesting the call was going through an H+ connection not a 4G one.
He assured me that no, that doesn't matter; if I can use mobile internet whilst on a call, this means my phone is using 4G calling. I was sceptical but said ok and ended the call.
However ... if I change my "Preferred network type" to "4G/5G" I am unable to make any calls.
Does this not confirm that I'm correct - my phone is not making 4G calls?
(I have tried doing the *#*#4636#*#* code and there is a switch next to "VoLTE provisioned" but it's turned off and greyed out.)

H & H+ are 3G indicators.

This is all linked to the Sony firmware flashed onto the phone for Three, which seems to have disabled VoLTE..
Not sure if this is you @line-wait asking on the Three community, but they seem to confirm it.. https://community.three.co.uk/t5/Devices/Xperia-1-ii-not-making-it-recieving-calls/m-p/38256
I would contact Sony to be honest, and see what they can advise.. There may be ways to flash a none Three firmware onto the phone at your own risk, and you will need to completely wipe the phone..

The Op says he joined from 3 with the same handset which didn't work on 3 with VOLTE

My handset, the Sony Xperia 1ii is one that was sold by O2 (even though that's not where I originally bought mine).

Customer could well mean it's a model sold by O2
Phrasing is ambiguous

To me that's not an o2 supplied handset and the handset is from 2020 it would be one that needs specific firmware at the time across all networks...

I've already stated the age could be an issue but having checked it was a supported device on O2 without the need for specific O2 firmware.
No * next to device.
Wifi and 4G Calling is currently available on the following devices:

Yup sorry, my wording was unclear.
I meant that this phone model is one that was, in the past, sold by O2.
I bought mine second hand a few years ago - it never had Three specific firmware on it (as far as I know). I suspect that it might originally have been sold by O2 because I remember it still had an O2 splash screen when I first got it. It would have been sold as "unlocked". I imagine I did a factory reset at some point after getting it.
