Over the past few months I've found my S3 has not been always receiving texts. It claims to have a signal and I can make phone calls, but I can't even receive a text I sent to myself.
On Saturday, I sent a text and had no reply. An hour later I noticed I had a missed call, yet the phone didn't ring, also there was 3 texts all with the same time stamp as the phone call. The guy that phoned me said it didn't actually ring, but just went silent, yet my phone was aware of the call but didn't ring.
I have a full signal during these issues. And yes I did the rather pointless remove/replace the SIM card and of course it makes no difference as expected.
The problem is intermittent, and I only realise when I have no texts when I expect to. I don't know if this is a Samsung, S3, Android or O2 issue but if it continues I'll dump both the phone and O2 (particularly since EE have some good packages for HTC One with 4G).
I can't be the only one that suffers this? I've been with o2 for 4+ years as pay monthly (around 35-40/month) but when this problem occurs it's difficult to not look elsewhere.

Check your postcode for mast issues : http://status.o2.co.uk/
If you have cleaned the sim card you might want to replace it at your O2 store. This takes up to 24 hours.
Try a soft reset by holding down the power and home button until the phone reboots
If this doesn't help clear the cache partition:
Turn off the phone and remove the battery. Wait 2 minutes and put it back
Press and hold down Volume Up + Home + Power buttons at the same time.
Release all buttons when you see S2 Logo.
Android system recovery will be loaded now
Select clear cache partition. (Volume buttons to go up or down, select with Home button)
Then select reboot.
A full factory reset will erase all data so do a back up first:
Turn off the phone and remove the battery. Wait 2 minutes and put it back
Press and hold down Volume Up + Home + Power buttons at the same time.
Release all buttons when you see S2 Logo.
Android system recovery will be loaded now
Select wipe data/factory reset. (Volume buttons to go up or down, select with Home button)

Thanks for replies.
In the end I decided it wasn't O2, and noticed the sleek HTC One so I've "O2 Refreshed" up to that. I should probably order a new SIM anyway.
Now, just wait for O2 to have 4G in Bristol.

I know it's been a while but I've been using my old non-smart phone as got tired of this S3. Need to get it sorted though as paying monthly for it but not using it. I did a full facory reset but still not getting all of my messeages. Some calls don't ring either - I just get a message saying I missed a call, even though signal strength is good.
Not just that, but now, the screen keeps going black and going to the home screen on almost all things I do. For example, I'll open up a picture many times and each time it will go back to the home screen after a few seconds. It doesn't do this ALL the time but most of the time. And the keyboard keeps disappearing as I'm writing a message, then reappear for a while before disappearing again.
any ideas?

I backed everything up on Kies and re-installed all the same apps. I reset from the bootloader.
Regarding the firmware, I don't even know what that is haha. I'm not that clued up with it all, bit too old probaby.
The O2 coverage checker says I've got full coverge.
The advice you give in the link is the same as what jonsie gives for a full factory reset no? I did what jonsie said in order to reset my phone before.
