To backup my data, as you cannot backup app data due to permissions.

You do not need to root the device to flash stock firmware.

Go to xda-developers forum, download the latest stock firmware, must be the UK version, (4.1.2 from March), download ODIN, and flash.

Do not wipe the device, all your personal data/files/apps etc will be unaffected.

This also gets rid of the ugly O2 boot screen.

Thanks, I do keep an eye on XDA and the one thing that nobody seemed to confirm is that you can flash with ODIN without wiping your data.

All,

Is there an idiots guide somewhere detailing how to replace an O2 Galaxy Note 2 ROM with a stock UK one?

I am fed up with the non-existant updates and would just like to have a bog-standard vanilla ROM.

I have looked at xda developers, but found it all a little bewildering!

Thread #174 here should help but let me know if not (process is the same) http://community.o2.co.uk/t5/Android-Devices-Samsung-HTC-Sony/Jelly-Bean-for-Galaxy-S2-Roll-out-started/td-p/391670/page/18

Just copy your internal USB storage to your PC then after wiping the phone reinstall your apps then copy back the USB copy you made to your PC.

I have had Odin wipe a phone when updating from ICS to JB, but it shouldn't do if just updating JB with a later JB release.

So, I followed these instructions and it worked pretty easily..apart from one issue.

Now when I connect the phone to Kies, I get the error message

"Device does not support software upgrading via Kies"

I have Googled this and it seems as though the CSC has not been changed from O2U to BTU.

Apparently to remedy this, I have to root the phone and then use an app called csc changer, which will then completely wipe the phone as part of the process.

All I wanted was a stock ROM.

Do I really now have to root and wipe??

Same here I would imagine as I did the update.

I'm not too concerned though as I do not use Kies and OTA updates clearly weren't working on the O2 firmware either.

Forget Kies and use Odin for any future updates if you don't want to wipe. Doing a factory reset will fix your CSC without the need to root but if you don't want to do that just obtain future updates from www.sammobile.com and flash with Odin. You can still use Kies for back ups and file syncing.

So, I just need to factory reset to solve this?

Won't that reload my original O2 firmware?

Also, what is the best way to factory reset?

Yes, a factory reset is all that is usually required. It will wipe your data though so you need to back up your phone first so you can reinstall your personal details later. Boot to recovery mode (Vol Up+Home+Power) until you see splash screen then let go. Choose the option to clear all data/reset with the vol down key then press power key to excecute.
