Disable mobile data except MMS

Anonymous

Hi there,

I'm thinking of buying a Samsung Galaxy S3, but seeing as it will be on Pay As You Go I want to be able to disable mobile data but still be able to use MMS.

As I understand it you can't disable mobile data while still being able to use MMS.

But from what I've been reading you may be able to do just that by changing your APN type to just MMS, would that work or am I way off?

I'm new to smartphones by the way lol.

Thanks

To do it the way you are trying would cost you £1 every time you received an MMS as the data port would be open other apps would hijack it. You can't live on wifi alone unless you never move from your house as you will find out soon enough slight_smile

You can do this no problem. I don't, because I have huge allowance, but my Mrs does this all the time. Just uses wifi at home, but when out, the mobile data is always turned off. She only has a very small allowance until her contract ends in September, so would be unable to leave it on, as in one day out and about, it may well get all used up without her even knowing. I bought the S3 for her, and assume that once contract is finished in Sept, I can get her a sim only deal with much better allowance??

Not without a data allowance you can't without incurring charges.

The S3 mini will behave in the same way, as would any other smartphone.

MMS requires an active data connection to function.

It is possible to have data without MMS, but to my knowledge you can not have it the other way round.

I will have a scoot around and try to clarify though.

Edit: This was taken from another carrier but may work.

Create a broken APN

Name:  O2 Dummy APN
APN: dummy
Proxy: Not Set
Port: Not Set
Username: dummy
Password: dummy
Server: not set

MCC: 999
MNC: 999
Authentication: PAP
APN Type: default,supl,internet
APN Protocol: IPv4

MMS (Correct working settings)

Name: O2 UK MMS
APN: wap.o2.co.uk or payandgo.o2.co.uk
Proxy: Not set
Port: Not Set
Username: o2wap or payandgo
Password: password
Server: Not set
MMSC: http://mmsc.mms.o2.co.uk:8002
MMS Proxy:  82.132.254.1
MMS port: 8080
MCC: 234
MNC: 10
Authentication: PAP
APN type: default,supl,mms
APN protocol: ipv4

Let me know how you get on.

Hi version7point0,

I created a broken APN and left the correct MMS APN and so far it seems to be doing what I want it to.

Is this method safe?

Thanks
