Solved! Go to Solution.

I wouldn't even use the word "fix" in speech marks for how pathetic a solution a hard reset is meant to be.
Does anyone know how to download and install the most recent Android 6.x.x version again?
Thanks to hard resetting to try and get this stupid Nougat update to work, I'm now stuck in a limbo with Android 6.0.0 stock installed which comes with the old Google Play app and tells me I need Google Play Services, but being completely unable to get Google Play Services to download or work through any means I've tried.
Also been unable to get Android 6.0 to be recognised by my Windows 10 laptop so I can restore my back-up from HTC Sync Manager. And without Google Play Services, Google Drive Back-up won't work to restore the other back-up I made before hard resetting.
I just want to get back to the most recent 6.x.x version again so that I can restore my back-ups and apps will work. Does anyone know where I can download it from for O2 UK phones and how to install it manually?

@Anonymous Is the phone still under warranty? Out of interest did you try getting mobiles.co.uk or O2 to take ownership of this issue and offer a repair / replacement (which surely the people who sold you the phone and / or the ones you have a contract with to buy it should do)?

I have had the phone for almost two years now, I have no idea if it's under warranty anymore or not (I'm guessing not as the contract is due for replacement in July). I might have to try and find the box. I very much double mobiles.co.uk would do anything and HTC aren't responding to emails.
After googling like mad yesterday I think I've found that a lot of people on different android software have had the problem with Google Play Services that I'm now having and it seems to be related to having to hard reset android devices running Android 6.x or 5.x. Something to do with the wrong Google Play Services being included in the factory default settings, or in my case it not being included. Just can't get it to work at all now despite having downloaded different versions of Google Play Services myself and trying many different "fixes".
Seems like hard resetting to get Nougat to work either fixes the update or breaks your phone functionality entirely.

Well an update for anyone else who comes across this and has the same problem as me - I spoke to Google support, HTC support and O2 support about it. None of them seemed to have any real idea how to fix the Nougat update problem, nor how to get the phone working again with Google apps from Android 6.0.0 after the factory reset.
Google support seemed the most interested out of all three, especially in the factory reset problems and seemed to acknowledge that there seemed to be a problem with the way the Google apps weren't working from the factory reset (especially that Google Play Services was completely missing from the factory reset apps). But they weren't "able" to offer any further support in my case because the Google Play Services app was missing and they can't support third party installs (downloading and installing it manually) in case that leads to further problems down the line. So because it was a HTC phone rather than Google phone, they then told me I had to take it through HTC despite it being Google apps (and their Nougat update attempt) causing the problem.
HTC were also more helpful than O2. O2 typically passed me through three different people in the online chat (HTC and Google only one person) and despite saying they'd read the chat from the previous two people, the third at O2 continued to ask obvious questions like have you tried making sure there's enough internal storage available for the updates? Well, you'd think a factory reset might just free up enough internal storage seeing as it wipes all data from the internal storage, right? That was the moment I facepalmed.
I'm reluctantly having to send the phone in for diagnostics and repair (first time I've ever had to), but both O2 and HTC offered to take it in (O2 via Carphone Warehouse), so I am going for HTC directly. I hope this doesn't happen to anyone else but maybe this will be helpful if it does.

I feel the pain.
My contract was up last month.
Since installing Nougat on my M9 it's been a complete bag of bugs.
Dropping wireless when apps not using it not in foreground.
Music apps losing BT connection when screen lock comes on.
Dropbox not syncing in background anymore.
Facebook slow as slow thing, dropping connection, locks up.
It's turned my favourite phone into an absolute dog ******.
Support have been nothing but manual monkeys reading out scripts.
End of my tether I'm afraid, and have been with O2 for bazillions of years now, but this has pushed me over the edge. I find myself even considering moving to a fruity device with someone else, which is something I thought I'd never hear myself say !

I guess this is still an issue then. My phone keeps gouing through the same loop, prompts to upgrade, boots to bootloader, boots up, prompts to upgrade.
Suspiciously close to contract end...
