Hi guys,

As most of you are aware the O2 webmail service will be closing on the 20th June 2016. Several recent email's from O2 have stated that your email account will be closing on different dates. These dates were incorrect and I can confirm that your email account will definitely be closing on the 20th June 2016. Sorry for the mix up with the closure dates.

There’s still time to transfer your contacts and email addresses, and attachments to Gmail and Outlook accounts (Hotmail). Just make sure you move them before your o2.co.uk email account closes on 20th June. Unfortunately, we can’t transfer them to Yahoo! Mail, so you’ll need to set up an email account with someone else like Gmail, Outlook (Hotmail), or another email account of your choice. Likewise, if you use your o2.co.uk email address as your login for any online services like banking or shopping, you'll need to update those too in case of any password resets.

If anyone has any questions please ask.

Martin

Have you read the O2 help?

I have no affiliation whatsoever with O2 or any subsidiary companies. Comments posted are entirely of my own opinion. This is not Customer Service so we are unable to help with account specific issues.

I found the easiest way was to forward the emails separately to my GMail account.

I'd just forward any important emails to the new gmail address.

To clear up any confusion, follow the steps in the link they provided @ http://www.o2.co.uk/help/digital-services/o2-email-closure-transferring-your-contacts

Some points to note:

  • O2 Webmail does NOT support IMAP so it will NOT mirror your folders
  • Folders (and their contents) will NOT be transferred at all
  • Only emails stored in the Inbox (default folder) will be transferred

If you have your emails nicely sorted into folders, the best way to do it is like this

  1. Transfer your O2 Webmail Inbox to Outlook/Gmail (set it so it transfers into a new folder)
  2. In your Outlook/Gmail move all newly transferred mail to a new folder
  3. Delete all emails from your O2 Webmail Inbox (or move them back into a folder)
  4. Go to Folders > whichever folder you want to transfer next (in O2 Webmail)
  5. Move ALL contents of that folder into your empty Inbox (in O2 Webmail)
  6. Repeat steps 1-5 until you have transferred all your emails.

This process might seem long if you have a massive horde of emails but it's the only way to move everything. As said by others, you should also change all accounts to use the new email address provided by Outlook/Gmail. If you act fast you will still have a few days to mop up all the newsletters and stuff that find themselves still going to your O2 account. I'm pretty sure this time there really will be no going back after they close the service on the 20th.

Thanks for that comprehensive explanation @Anonymous I am sure your 'points to remember' will be helpful to others.

Good to hear from someone who has managed to transfer everything over successfully wink

Following the steps in my example above, here is an example:

Your O2 Webmail structure may look like this

  • Inbox
  • Drafts
  • Sent Items
  • Trash
  • Spam
  • Banking
  • Newsletters
  • Personal Emails
  • Shopping Confirmations

So to follow the steps above:

  1. Transfer O2 Webmail Inbox to Outlook/Gmail (to a folder called O2 Webmail)
  2. Move all newly-transferred emails to a new folder called @Inbox (in Outlook/Gmail)
  3. Highlight all emails and move to [new folder] create one called @Inbox (in O2 Webmail)
  4. Go to Folders > Banking (in O2Webmail)
  5. Move all emails from Banking to Inbox (in O2 Webmail)
  6. 1. Transfer O2 Webmail Inbox to Outlook/Gmail
    2. Move all newly-transferred emails to a new folder called Banking (in Outlook/Gmail)
    3. Highlight all emails and move back to folder called Banking (or delete them) (in O2 Webmail)
    4. Go to Folders > Newsletters (in O2Webmail)
    5. Move all emails from Newsletters to Inbox (in O2 Webmail)

...and just keep repeating the steps like that until everything is transferred. wink

I think people who were trying to move stuff over were upset because they expected complete folders to transfer.. They were told they had to transfer emails from their webmail folders and create new ones in outlook or gmail. However, I personally love a step by step guide such as the one you have created. Not everyone is tech savvy. So yours is excellent ....and well done. wink
