You can but it from anywhere as long as the phone is unlocked you can use your O2 sim.
It should come with a sim card but if not they are free from O2 anyway or you can get your old sim card cut down in a phone shop.
I have no affiliation whatsoever with O2 or any subsidiary companies. Comments posted are entirely of my own opinion. This is not Customer Service so we are unable to help with account specific issues.

They would supply one or pick one up from antsy O2 shop.

An O2 shop would transfer your number and tariff from your original SIM card to the new sized one.

Please take into account a swap can take from a few minutes up to approx 24 hours to settle turning your phone off and on helps the re connection.

Or you can do it here http://swapmysim.o2.co.uk/

You just transfer everything from your old sim/account to a new sim of the correct size.
An o2 store can do it for you or you can get a sim and do it yourself using this form http://swapmysim.o2.co.uk/
Your tariff, number and any credit all stays the same.

Thank you for that info, I would be doing on line rather than in the shop, so does the new sim card come with the phone?  if so could wait until it arrives and then go on line to change my sim details over to the new sim card is that correct?

Finally what would happen if the phone was bought from say Amazon can I still do this on my account on o2?  Cheers Joules

If ordered thro O2 then the sim should come with the phone , yes

From amazon , as long as it's unlocked to all networks or on the O2 network already.
