I always put my phone ROAMING OFF as soon as i leave the UK. I did not answer any calls from UK or listen to my voicemails whilst abroad but have been charged for them !!
Has this happened to anybody else? Will need to de activate my voicemail next time?

Voicemail often catches people out.
Although you turn roaming off the phone will still register on an overseas network when switched on, even if it won't allow calls, text etc.
Now any incoming calls will first go out to where you are and then return to Voicemail. Once that clicks in, even though no message may be recorded, you pay for the return leg.

Hi there @Chrissie2
Sorry to hear you have charges for voicemail. Yes it does need to be switched off before you leave.
