Reducing monthly phone plan after upgrade

Anonymous
Not applicable
Hi,

I'm due my upgrade and yesterday visited my local o2 shop to discuss options (iPhone 6s).

Annoyingly there is no longer options to pay more for the phone up front to reduce the monthly payments. The guy in the shop said the max I could lay up front was £70, there were no other options on his system and it seems to be the same online as well.

He said what I could do is after taking the contract out, I could then ring customer services and pay a chunk off the phone plan and that would then reduce my monthly payment. he couldn't produce any evidence to support this and I can't find anything in the T&Cs that suggest you can either.

Does anyone know if this is right? It's frustrating o2 have took away the option to pay more up front, I've been with o2 for over 10 years and have always done this due to selling my previous phone to fund the payment.

Thanks in advance.

Hi @Anonymous You can pay as much off your device as you like during the contract. In fact with the Refresh deal you can pay off the handset plan at anytime... cancel the airtime and walk away....there is also the option to add to any monthly DD payments via My O2...(you go into My O2 and look at the section called make a payment)

And here is info about the refresh deal

Although you can pay off more of your device plan each month, your payments won't reduce until you pay off the device completely. Once that is done you will only pay the airtime part of your tariff. You also pay full price for the phone and just take an airtime tariff from the start.

Thanks for the replies. Nice to see the sales guy resorting to lies to try and sell the contract. Not impressed.

They have targets to meet, I'm sure. But you did the right thing to come and ask us first

Not so much lies, more a problem of not knowing and guessing. You can pay off any amount and it will reduce the overall amount owing but payments are set and can't be adjusted to a lesser amount.
